The city of Newcastle, including Lake Macquarie and Hunter Region, is Australia's 6th largest city with a population of nearly 700 000. It is Australia's second oldest city and though once an industrial city it is now an elegant and attractive destination full of historic buildings and interesting walks. Newcastle lies on a magnificent working harbour and is the site of the world's largest coal export terminal. The city was originally a temperate rainforest, remnants of which can still be seen in Blackbutt reserve, the only temperate rainforest in the world completely surrounded by a city.

Harbour sights… Newcastle is built around a large working harbour, the entrance to which is guarded by Nobbys Lighthouse and Breakwater. The adjacent foreshore area is the perfect place to while away the hours watching the busy harbour traffic while enjoying a drink or meal in one of the harbour side cafes, bars or restaurants.

Catch the ferry across the harbour to Stockton for a stunning view of the Newcastle city skyline. Take a stroll along the Shipwreck Walk and enjoy the southern end of the largest costal sand mass in the Southern hemisphere - Stockton Bight Sand Dunes.

Newcastle's spectacular coastline and pristine beaches have been celebrated with the creation of the Bathers Way, a five kilometer coastal walk stretching from the commanding lighthouse at Nobbys Headland and finishing at Merewether Beach. Merewether Ocean Baths are the largest in the southern hemisphere. Experiencing the remarkable Bathers Way should be a "must" during any visit to Newcastle.

Visit Blackbutt Reserve, an undulating natural environment consisting of peaceful picnic settings, wide open spaces, bushwalking trails and a diverse range of habitats and ecosystems. The reserve is home to a wide variety of Australian wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, wombats and birds.

Take a tour of Christ Church Cathedral and discover its rich history. A survivor of the Japanese submarine attack of WWII and the 1989 Newcastle earthquake, Christ Church Cathedral is now a fully restored masterpiece, Beautiful grounds and views surround the city's castle.

Lake Macquarie

The city of Lake Macquarie extends over 750 square kilometres of mountains, beaches, hills and coastal plains encircling one of the largest coastal salt water lakes in the Southern Hemisphere. It is one of the fastest growing cities in NSW and the presence of a beautiful lake and pristine beaches makes the area a delightful place to visit.

Boating on Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie is renowned for its water sports. Swimming, boating, fishing and sailing are year round past-times with thousands of craft taking to the water at weekends and in holiday times.

The 25 km long Yuelarbah Track is the northern section of the Great North Walk, a walking trail which starts at Sydney Cove and travels through bush land where possible to Newcastle. The name Yuelarbah comes from the Awabakal Aboriginal language meaning "footsteps in the sand". Walking the track takes you past waterfalls, Leichhardt Lookout, old mine shafts, Glenrock Lagoon and along the beach.

dobellThe home and art studio of the late Sir William Dobell (1899-1970), Dobell House is owned and operated by the Sir William Dobell Memorial Committee which is a completely volunteer organization. Twice winner of the prestigious Archibald Prize he was also known for his landscapes. Visit his home to learn more about one of Australia's best known artists.

Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley, set amongst beautiful, rolling, green hills, is Australia's oldest and one of its most well-known wine regions. Vineyards were first established in the area in the 1830's. and since that time, the area has grown both in size and recognition. Here you will find world-class Hunter Valley Semillon that has been called "Australia's unique gift to the world', great Australian Shiraz and generations of family winemakers that are still here to tell the tale.
