With only a few weeks' notice, I (Glenys Mitchell) decided to head off on this voyage. One reason to go - ambassadors of Friendship Force from different countries and therefore the opportunity to make new friends. Another reason to sail was to visit Central America and transit through the Panama Canal.
Some Friendship Force ambassadors left the ship in Costa Rica and enjoyed a home-stay there.
The voyage did not disappoint. I made many new friends and I know we will be seeing each other again soon.
There were only about 400 passengers on board so it was easy to befriend many. Friendship Force had a few meetings and 'get togethers'. Apart from the 40 Friendship Force ambassadors accompanying George Brown, there was a group of Nikonians (Nikon camera buffs), Rhode Scholars (formerly Elder Hostel) and students of hospitality and tourism from Toronto. Many on board were Lifelong Learners who regularly sail on the Explorer.
Sailing on a ship set up as a floating university has many special features.
There is a great library on board with a multitude of books on many subjects and also fiction for relaxation. There is a ships' store with every known remedy for ailments, souvenir cards, clothes with Explorer & Semester at Sea logos and the list goes on.
The computer usage was free and there were 50 licenses operating. Being the size it is (max 800 passengers) it is a small, very swift ship. The Captain assured us that in the event of a pirate attack we would just out-sail them!
There is a formal dining room and a buffet for meals – snacks by the pool. Several bars operate throughout the ship and the piano bar was the favourite for most as the blues/jazz pianist was fantastic. The karaoke was a popular way to end the evenings with a lot of fun. We had nightly entertainment by professionals and also an amateur performance which was so popular many of the entertainers were asked for a repeat performance. Yes, the FF ambassadors on board contributed to this lively night. A dress-up night was a riot!! Friendship Force ambassadors did us proud!
During the days of sailing without going ashore, there were lectures on varied subjects led by well known and popular (and humorous) Professors. The doctor on board gave health tips for the various countries we visited. When we docked in the various ports, there were many various opportunities for shore excursions. Central America is full of ancient Mayan sites and above all else Central America is colourful.
You have already received information on the future cruises which Friendship Force has the opportunity to take part in. What an experience! Go if you can!
